have lost my activation code and reinstalled windows

Hi I lost my windows cd and packaging when I moved house, I wanted to do a reinstall but obviously didn't have the activation key. I got some duff advice about the product ID number being the activation code and burned a copy of Windows 7 from digital rivers. I have since performed the reinstall with formatted hard drives.
